We hope you had a fabulous ‘Ekka’ holiday yesterday (or Monday, depending in what area you live and work).

After a dagwood dog or two and an empty pocket (if you’re like any of us with kids), it’s back to work today for us.

We’re getting some great feedback regarding our weird and wonderful open home stories from our experiences, other agents and you – the people that have attended open homes over the years and in some cases, encountered more than you were expecting!

The topic continues today…

  • The first story is from Yolandi, an agent from Sydney…

“We were conducting an open home and things were going well as there seemed to be several interested buyers. I was standing outside on the footpath talking to some of the buyers at the end of the open home and the owner came home. He tried to ‘sell’ the home to all the buyers and seemed to be doing OK until he mentioned that his dead Mother was buried in the front yard by the big cactus. I called of the buyers later but everyone said that they were freaked out and no longer interested in buying the property.”

  • The next cracker comes from Craig, an agent from Brisbane’s south side…

“A large family with 5 or 6 kids in tow turned up to a packed open, had a look, then left without a goodbye. As I’m locking up at closing time, I notice one of their kids still at the house. Yep, they left one behind!! When I eventually got hold of them on their home phone (no mobile), they simply said “oh thanks” and casually returned to pick the kid up without any panic. True story!”

  • Here’s a brilliant story from Kerry, an agent from Coffs Harbour…

“Selling the home of a newly separated couple. Wife had a talking parrot. As one of the open home attendees was leaving (an older gentleman) the parrot piped up with “f**k off Barry” the potential purchaser was not amused, and turned to tell me that he’d just been abused but the parrot. I asked him if his name was Barry to which he replied “no” then I calmly told him that the parrot wasn’t talking to him. His wife almost fell on the floor laughing, as did the other buyers in the home at the time.”

  • The final story for today is from Braden, another agent from Sydney. I must admit that I wasn’t sure whether to publish this one but the truth is that when I asked for funny open home stories from agents in private social media groups, you’d be surprised how many similar stories to this one emerged. This was arguably the funniest…

“We also interrupted a young lady owner of ours having some ‘alone adult time’ in her bedroom when we arrived for an open house. She forgot we were coming and left very quickly and red faced. But the killer was when the buyers came out of her room giggling, after the third groups of buyers to do so, I had to see what they were giggling about and what did I find? She forgot to turn the toy off and it was buzzing on the edge of her bed. Hilarious.”

Next week, I’ll continue with this theme and whilst I have other topics that I want to share with you, this one is proving to be very popular.

Until next week, Happy Listing & Happy Selling.

Michael’s little girl Lilliana was fixated on a large purple unicorn at the ‘Ekka’ last Sunday. Her Grandfather (Michael’s Father – Reg) was her hero and managed to win it for her at one of the games in sideshow alley.
