Today, we’ll share with you the last instalment of our series where we’ve shared a number of interesting events that occurred at open homes.

We’ve received an overwhelming amount of feedback from you all so I’m glad you’ve enjoyed this topic…and thank you for taking the time to write to us with your own stories and feedback for us.

Without further ado, here’s the last of these funny stories…

This first story comes from Walter…

“Not sure if this is so much funny as it just made me angry. We had our home listed with a particular agent and after the first five weeks, I had only heard from them once and was getting pretty annoyed. I had no feedback from any open home at all and left messages for the agent but he did not call me back. I was watching TV at home one night and the phone rang. It was someone from the agency that I had listed with. I first thought “it’s about time” but the person on the other end of the phone proceeded to tell me that they had huge numbers of buyers in my area looking for homes exactly like mine and wondered if I would be interested in selling with them. I ‘not so politely’ informed them that it would be great if they could bring these huge number of buyers over to my house since they already had it listed for sale. We terminated the listing with this estate agent the next morning.”

The next story was sent in by Marianne…

“My husband and I came to an open home and when we walked up to the door, there was a post-it note stuck on the door telling us the key was under mat and we could let ourselves in (not sure why they hid the key when the post-it note told us exactly where it was lol). We wondered if the agent was running late or something so we stayed until the end of the open home since there were several other buyers there but the agent never turned up. We just put the key back and left. The house was fully furnished so what’s scary is that anyone could have looted the place”

Here’s a story from Helen that may leave some of you terrified just thinking about this…

“At one open home we visited, there were lots of people in the home when someone yelled “rat” and a huge rat was darting across the living room floor. Everyone jumped on the lounge, chairs, anything they could find to avoid it. It finally ran out the front door so everyone started to relax and laugh but then another rat came out from one of the bedrooms. Chaos again!”

Our final story is from Ben…

“When we arrived at the open home, we were waiting for the agent and he arrived right on the dot of the start time. He hurried up to the door, unlocked it and let everyone in. We looked around and noticed a few buyers were laughing amongst themselves and we couldn’t figure out why. We walked down the hallway to the bedrooms and one of the bedroom doors was shut. Just as we were about to open it, we heard a few noises from inside the room and realized that the tenants were in there having a good old morning session. We started wandering down the hallway when the door flung open behind us and one of the tenants was there with a towel wrapped around his waist. He was furious. He started abusing the agent as they apparently didn’t know about the open home.”

So there you have it – plenty of open homes where things didn’t exactly go as planned.

Next week, we’ll announce the winner of our contest for the best open home story and we’ll move on to another topic.

Until then, Happy Listing & Happy Selling!
